What Makes Us Unique?

MEWPs, forklifts and other heavy equipment

MEWPs, forklifts and other heavy equipment are an occupational essential for many businesses. They also pose inherent risks for the people who operate them. That’s why training your employees on the safe use of industrial equipment is the best investment you can make in your workforce.

UNlike our competitors that offer Safety Training as a perk, we do not manufacture, sell or rent industrial equipment.

When you call us, our only focus is what we do, keeping your employees 100% safe and your company free of Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) fines which could easily bankrupt your business’ finances and reputation.

As a federally certified Women-Owned Small Businesses (WOSB), Safety Training Group USA provides safety training to manufacturers, plants, warehouses, construction sites and companies located in Northeast Ohio.

Did you know employees can’t be fined by OSHA for safety violations? Employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy work environment that follows OSHA standards.

Fines, coupled with unexpected workers’ compensation and medical expenses, time involved in investigating and writing up reports, increased insurance costs, lost productivity, absenteeism and potential litigation, can easily a cripple a business.

Accidents, Fatalities and Fines Can Bankrupt Your Business

No one expects not to return home at the end of a workday because of a serious accident. From falls to crush injuries, industrial equipment operation can be incredibly dangerous if an operator isn't properly trained.

In 2020, 4,764 workers died on the job. People working in transportation and material moving occupations and construction and extraction occupations accounted for nearly half of all fatal workplace injuries.

A study published in 2020 cited the cost of nonfatal workplace injuries at approximately 11 lost workdays and a value of $1,560 per person per year in the United States.

OSHA requires employers to train operators on safe operation of mobile elevated work platforms and powered industrial trucks and the hazards created when using these vehicles.

Trained operators must know how to do the job properly and safely as demonstrated by a workplace evaluation. That’s where we can help! Our experienced instructors:

  • Provide hands-on employee and/or train-the-trainer instruction at either your facility or our state-of-the-art warehouse located in Akron, OH.
  • Offer in-person classroom instruction, never virtual.
  • Provide obstacle course testing for mobile elevated work platforms and powered industrial trucks.
  • Certify that each operator has received training.  Evaluate each operator at least once every three years.
  • Evaluate the operator's performance and determine the operator competent to operate a powered industrial truck safely.
  • Provide refresher training when an operator demonstrates a deficiency in the safe operation of the truck or switches to a different vehicle.

In addition to training, we offer onsite safety consultations to help you mitigate risks and ensure your emergency evacuation and hazardous materials plans, safety records and accident reports are all up-to-date and in compliance with OSHA standards.

Our Training Saves You Time and Money

Accidents can lead to machinery being taken out of service, costly repairs and downtime at worksites. When workers are properly trained, they are more confident in their skills, leading to better working conditions and higher productivity levels. Another benefit of safety training is reduced premiums for worker’s compensation coverage.

All training provided by Safety Training Group USA complies with current OSHA federal and state operator training regulations and America National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards.

Truck-related topics covered in our training include:

  • Operating instructions, warnings, and precautions for the types of truck the operator will be authorized to operate
  • Differences between the truck and the automobile
  • Truck controls and instrumentation: where they are located, what they do and how they work
  • Engine or motor operation
  • Steering and maneuvering
  • Visibility (including restrictions due to loading)
  • Fork and attachment adaptation, operation and use limitations
  • Vehicle capacity
  • Vehicle stability
  • Any vehicle inspection and maintenance that the operator will be required to perform
  • Refueling and/or charging and recharging of batteries
  • Operating limitations
  • Any other operating instructions, warnings, or precautions listed in the operator’s manual for the types of vehicles that the employee is being trained to operate
  • Machine guarding
  • Fall prevention
  • Lockout/tagout

Workplace-related topics

  • Surface conditions where the vehicle will be operated
  • Composition of loads to be carried and load stability
  • Load manipulation, stacking, and unstacking
  • Pedestrian traffic in areas where the vehicle will be operated
  • Narrow aisles and other restricted places where the vehicle will be operated
  • Hazardous (classified) locations where the vehicle will be operated

MEWP accidents are most commonly a result of an operator’s lack of training and experience, mechanical faults and not following safety procedures when working at heights. Some of the biggest hazards operators can encounter are entrapment, overturning, falling and collision with people, overhead cables or other vehicles. MEWP training standards require certification for workers who are near a MEWP on the job site, including supervisors, occupants and operators.

All employees taught by Safety Training Group USA will be trained in the following:

  • Recognition of, and preventive measures for, the safety hazards associated with their individual work tasks
  • General recognition and prevention of safety hazards associated with the use of working platforms, including the provisions in the section relating to the particular working platform to be operated
  • Emergency action plan procedures
  • Personal fall arrest system inspection, care, use and system performance.
